It’s a cliche. January is a time for setting goals. Really, I set goals every month, or even every day. But it’s time for me to take a look at how I’m doing for January.

At the beginning of the month, I read @metroknow‘s goal-setting post on Almost Fit, and decided to adopt his mini-goal of losing ten pounds in January. That’s a little more than the recommended 1-2 pounds per week for women, but I thought a quick weight loss would both motivate me and give me energy.

As of this moment, I’m down maybe five pounds. My weight on the scale keeps jumping up and down; sometimes 3-4 pounds difference from one day to the next.  I don’t know what to think of that.  I am happy to be down, though.

This week, my goal is to get up at 5:00 a.m. each day. I’ve enlisted my husband to help make sure this happens, since he gets up at 5:00 a.m.  He’s also supposed to exercise with me, but he hasn’t been feeling well.

In this area, success so far! I’ve been up at 5:00 two days in a row, with two short workouts done. I’ve also had some excellent reading and writing time in the early morning.

Also this week, I wrote about eating carbs: my confusion over how much and what kind are good for you.  Specifically, I asked about pasta and rice, because those have always been staples in my diet.

My reader poll says that most of you rely on pasta and rice as well (10 out of 15 surveyed). Most commenters seem to agree that moderation and focusing on whole grains is important.

You’ll be glad to know that I’ve got brown rice on the stove to go with tonight’s stir-fry. And I won’t be eating a huge pile.  I also mentioned before that I dislike the time required to make brown rice. Well, I made sure to start the rice as soon as I got home from work, and I’m taking advantage of the cooking time to write this post.

However, now I’ve got to go make that stir-fry! So, tell me, did you set any goals this month? How are you doing with them?
