Bicycle Commuting Mama Gets Pushed Over
First of all: I AM FINE. And my bike is mostly fine. It needs a few adjustments.
But yes, a car did push me over. I don’t think there are going to be any legal issues from it, but just in case, I’m not going to get into the details here.
I will tell you that the car didn’t make contact with my body. I and my bike fell sideways, my knee hit the pavement, and I ended up with a mild road rash. I didn’t hit my head on anything.
Some passer-by called the police, and they did take a report, and we exchanged information. I rode my bike on home, since it was just a few more blocks.
I’m pretty shaken up. I do need a soothing cup of herbal tea before bed, and a good night’s sleep.
And now I’m worried that you won’t believe me when I say that cycling is safe. But really, I am OK. And I’ve been in car accidents, too. Neither driving nor cycling is 100% safe.

Portland is still working really hard to make biking safer.
The program I want to transfer into at PSU for my bachelor’s degree (Community Development) is a program of the school of urban planning. I’m excited that I get to learn more about bike commuting and mass transit.
I really like the pilot program where they’re putting the parked cars on the outside of the bike path to provide more of a buffer between drivers and cyclists.
I also like the green boxes.

(Also, I’m really glad you’re okay)!

I’m so glad you’re okay! Bicycle riding is as safe as a lot of other things but accidents do happen. Sounds like this was one of those mishaps that could have been worse but wasn’t. Thank goodness for that! I hope your bike is really okay and your knee and you! Take it easy if you need to.

I’m so glad you’re okay! And I’m glad that you got right back on the bike, too. One of the times I was in a car accident (my little Jetta door-smacked by a GIANT SUV), the lady who was driving the SUV almost passed out when she saw my damage, and I was glad I kept hard candy in my purse…I hereby declare the rest of the week Free Hard Candy Days. Use the accident to claim hard candy from anybody who has some.
