All good points, Johnny. We don't have as many good bike routes available in East County. Thanks for stopping by.

not to be offensive, but when and where are cyclist suppose to ride? i get off at 5pm sometimes and if there are no bike lanes or if they are not safe (frequently) what am i to do? just wait till traffic calms down around 8 or ride miles out of my way to stay on side streets? I do find it funny that when ridding down burnside in gresham i am not any slower than traffic when you take lights in to account, cars pass me while moving and i catch them again at the next red.
have a great day

Now that you say that, I think I did, once. And I thought "ooooh - radish!" Being in the longtail market, and all. They are on sale, now, but I can't imagine having one shipped when there are local, price competitive things already here in town! The Kona Ute is my dream bike, and I think I'm going to buy it tomorrow. So exciting! My goal is to be able to do all 5 mi or less rides w/ my two boys. After biking with them for 10 miles today, I know I have my work cut out for me!!! It's worth it though, right? (right???)

Hi there! I commute on burnside between 71st and 181st, east bound AM and westbound PM. But I commute w/out the kiddos, as they stay in near-in SE where I start my commute. I may have seen you once or twice, as I only do the 25 mi-roundtrip 2 days/wk. I will be getting a ute for the family hauls soon. I am tempted to try the long commute on it, thought! Happy biking :-)

I bought safety vests just for walking. Out here in the sticks, our lanes aren't even wide enough for a white stripe marking the edge of the road. I also put flashing strobes on the double stroller and I wear one on my parka when I walk on dark, rainy days.

We are so far out that bike commuting isn't really an option and the Columbia County bus would cost about $35 for a round trip into PDX propper.

I can guarantee there aren't many like us here. The one couple we knew moved to Eugene last year.

When I was 12, we lived near 198 & Stark and I used to ride my bike all over, including to and from school in Rockwood. The neighborhood has changed tho...

Our bicyclists are certifiable. They ride during rush hour, in car lanes (we don't have enough bike lanes to make any difference) and they scare me to pieces.

OTOH, I would ride one of those - what did you call them, bakfiets? - in a heartbeat. In not-summer, anyway. How awesome to be able to get groceries and do small errands without using a car! I don't have enough balance to ride a proper bike, but that would be great.

Steven's right, you need a safety vest. So do the girls. :)

I think you do need a safety vest, with reflectors. Drivers have license to operate their vehicles, but they don't necessarily KNOW how to drive .
