We don’t watch nearly as much TV as we used to, and I’m sure that’s a good thing. One reason is that there are very few shows (at least on broadcast/limited basic cable stations) on that we can all watch together. For instance,  on Mondays at 8:00 is “How I Met Your Mother”. My husband and I really like this show, but it’s definitely not for the whole family.  Most days of the week are like this – there’s either nothing interesting on or nothing we can really watch together.

The one exception is “Mythbusters”. On Wednesday nights, we all stop what we’re doing and watch it at 8:00 (the previous week’s new episode is on at 8:00; at 9:00 we adults watch “Glee”).  It’s great, because we all enjoy it, plus SCIENCE! Yes, there is actual science in there along with the explosions. For instance, last night Kari explained to us what freezing a lock with liquid nitrogen does to the molecules that makes the lock brittle.

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, the main Mythbusters, were recently invited to a speech by President Obama launching the “Educate to Innovate” campaign, which will emphasize science education.  Discovery Communications, parent company of the Discovery Channel and the Science Channel, is one of the campaign partners. “Mythbusters” will be part of a commercial-free science education block on the Science Channel, and “Mythbusters” stars will be in a “Be the Future” PSA campaign.

“Mythbusters” is on all day today. Most holiday weekends, there seems to be a “Mythbusters” marathon. So between dinner, football, and maybe a movie or two, we’ll still have something to watch if we want to. Thanks, Discovery!
