Today was the first day of my two-mile challenge, in which I will travel exclusively by bike or on foot within a two-mile radius of home.

I don’t plan to log all fifteen days of the challenge here, but I’ll be writing about days on which I do use my bike for something outside of my normal routine.

For instance, today I did my usual bike commute, but I also biked to a PTO meeting in the evening.  PTO meetings are held at the local school, which is only half a mile away. It’s a cinch to bike, but when I suggested it last month my husband nixed the idea, and I went along with him.  He’s not really into biking and walking at night or in inclement weather, so we usually do drive to evening events at the school.

The trip was entirely successful, but while the bike trip itself is short, getting ready took longer than I had planned on.  Everyone needed shoes, jackets, helmets, and lights. In fact, getting ready may have taken longer than actually biking to school!

If you’re game for a challenge, biking a short distance like this is a good start. Do you attend any meetings or gatherings within half a mile of home? Or one mile? Give it a try — just once.  If you’re traveling after dark, make sure you have lights. I use these inexpensive and easy-to-use LEDs from Planet Bike, which attach to your bike or helmet with Velcro straps.
