Bicycling Commuting Mama: A New Myth
Posted on November 08th, 2008 in Cycling
Today I read an article on “6 Myths About Cycle Commuting.” Most of it was what I expected: it’s not safe, it’s too expensive, my workplace is too far away, etc. The last one took me by surprise, though.
Myth #6: Cycling will turn me impotent.
What? Obviously that doesn’t apply to me. But that is one I had not heard before. Apparently professional riders (like, those who are riding for hours each day) with poorly fitting seats have been known to experience impotence due to pressure on nerves and blood vessels.
But the point is, men, don’t let that scare you away from bicycle commuting. Okay?

I’ve actually heard this before.
A friend and her husband who were trying to get pregnant were told by the doctor that the husband should stop riding his bike! That was a long time ago but I recently heard the same thing from a relative trying to get pregnant! Their doctor told them the same thing.

There ARE saddles that are designed to avoid pressure in the wrong places, Specialized in particular makes some very nice ones. Although more rare for a casual cyclist, some women have experienced pain and other symptoms from excessive saddle pressure on the perineum. They do make some female-friendly saddles with cut-out regions to prevent it.
