Bicycle update
Darn it, I know I had something to say about my bike trip today, but I can’t remember what it was! Instead, here are some random bicycle notes.
On Monday, I actually lined up behind another cyclist to wait for the light at E. Burnside and 102nd Avenue! That’s amazing for the outer East Side. Of course, he quickly outdistanced me. He looked like he was used to biking and intent on getting somewhere, while I am content to coast along just fast enough to keep the bike upright and moving in a straight line.
Today, I noticed that my backpack is starting to stink. I know, I can wash it – but I wonder if it’s time to think about another carrying system? I’m not sure what I can do with the child seat on the back, but I’m sure I can find out on the internets.
I also nearly collided with a car making a right turn in front of me today. Watch it, car people!
And finally, BikePortland.org reports that the bicycle-related economy is up.

Yeah, we have laws here to prevent the right turn car/bike collision. It makes it a lot less scary.
Depending on your bike, I would think you could put a basket on the front, although for many reasons that’s not supposed to be the best. You may still be able to do panniers. Or you could carry a messenger bag, if that would hold all your stuff.
Nicole and I think the cold is going to be harder than you expect. She’s already wearing legwarmers here in Sacramento at 6:30 am with shorts, and will be wearing them with pants for most of the winter. Just FYI.

I have been known to walk to the bus stop in the cold, you know. And I’d worry about the kids, but they’ve walked/ridden in the stroller before, too. And it won’t be like Laura and Almanzo coming back from Brewster’s.

It’s more like, knees don’t work right, or something. It’s different on a bike. That’s why they sell those special kneewarmers and elbowwarmers for cyclists.

Since learning to drive a school bus, I am very aware of Bikers. Something for both to think about: Bikes need to ride the same direction as cars and need to follow the same rules, you are a vehicle.
Drivers need to leave room for bikes and treat them as if they are a car or motorcycle, if they are not blocking traffic.
Takes both doing what needs to be done.
Today I say three bikes going the wrong way on the sidewalk! That is wrong.

I’m sure you will find a way to keep your muscles and joints warmed in the winter weather. You have the determination to do it!

Good for you, joining the bike commute community! My job makes such a move impractical, and even if that weren’t the case, I can’t balance on a bike, but I’m doing my part to promote bike commuting by being a respectful driver. Be careful!
